The British Group Baucon Asia 5-8 October 1999 Singapore

The FMCEC acted as the British Trade International SESA (Support for Exhibitions and Seminars Abroad) sponsors of the British Group at the Baucon Asia Exhibition. 10 British companies exhibited at Baucon Asia with SESA grant aid taking a total of 326 sqm of space in Hall 3 and in the outside display area. Federation members, JCB, promoted their presence at the show by running an Operators Challenge.

The FMCEC ran a British Group Information Centre which provided a meeting point, message taking facilities, computer access, multi-lingual hostess, phone, fax and Internet connections for group members as well as serving very welcome iced water and cold drinks.

The FMCEC interactive CD-ROM, Business Tracker III, was distributed to visitors to the Information Centre. Several visitors to the Information Centre had used the Business Tracker I distributed at Baucon Asia 97 and had returned specially for an updated copy. The Information Centre also provided an opportunity for a further 22 British companies to display literature and graphics. Rob and Joanna Oliver who, with the help of a local hostess, took enquiries manned the information stand and trade leads from visitors. Many of the companies who used the display facility were looking for distributors in Singapore and the Asia Pacific region. Those who already had a distributor used the facility to raise awareness of their product. A number of visitors, from a variety of countries, to the stand were distributors looking for new products and we are hopeful that useful contacts have been made.

There were a total of 330 exhibitors at the show. In addition to the British group there were national pavilions from the USA and Germany. The Germans were by far the largest overseas group at the exhibition as would be expected with a German organised exhibition. Individual exhibitors at Baucon were mainly Singaporean. The organiser’s official visitor attendance figure was a total of 9,777 trade visitors from 52 countries and regions.

Despite the continued depression in the Asian economy most exhibitors reported that the show had been far more successful than had been anticipated. The feeling was that the market for construction equipment was slowly recovering and that within 12-18 months would become increasingly buoyant. The Singapore government is investing heavily in infrastructure programmes in an attempt to kick-start the economy.
