MEi Load Indication Systems acquired by the Thermo Electron Corporation The Saint-Gobain Group has announced the acquisition of its Crystals and Detectors business, which includes the MEi range of products, by the Thermo Electron Corporation of the USA. The transfer of the business will complete by 1 July 2002. The MEi range, which includes the MicroLoad and UniLoad on-board weighing systems for wheeled loaders and lift trucks, will be expanded and developed by the new owners. MEi branded load monitoring systems form one of a number of electronic product ranges manufactured by Saint-Gobain Crystals and Detectors. Other products of the company are for radiation monitoring in the power, industrial and medical sectors. "The acquisition represents a significant enhancement of our business" said Greg Herrema, President of the Environmental Instruments Division. "the Thermo Electron Corporation is totally focused on the manufacture and supply of market-leading instrument technology, and the addition of MEi to our portfolio is an exciting progression in the strategic development of our business". Ferndown based GKD Technik has appointed Trans Tech Systems Inc of New York as its authorised sole distributor for the USA. GKD Technik, a division of GKD Europe Ltd, has been supplying crane and excavator rated capacity indicators (RCIs) in the UK and Europe to OEMs and dealers for ten years to meet the European Machinery Safety Standards. The American National Standards Institute and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers have now agreed on new safety requirements, in line with Europe, to make crane load indicators mandatory on mobile and crawler cranes in the USA. GKD’s RCIs will now be marketed in the USA by Trans Tech Inc, who manufacture and sell instrumentation for the construction industry. Edward Spiteri, GKD’s Sales and Marketing Director, said, "the USA market for cranes is vast and just one major manufacturer has 10,000 cranes that will require RCIs retrofitted to them to bring them up to the new safety standards." On 1 May 2002 Pengo Europe Ltd changed its name to Universal Augers Ltd. Originally established in 1990 the business has grown significantly over the last twelve years to become one of the UK’s major auger manufacturing and drilling accessories business. The decision to change the name was for two reasons. First, in December 2001 Pengo Europe Ltd demerged from its previous parent Pengo Corporation, the US based auger manufacturing business - it is now an independently owned business. The second reason was to identify more directly with auger manufacturing - a major part of the business. Universal Augers and Pengo Corporation will continue their very close working relationship. Meet

The TriMark head office is
located in Iowa, USA, and is an employee owned corporation. It covers
over 100,000 square feet and in addition to flexible manufacturing
capacity, houses the central R&D, design and testing facilities.
"Improve the Product,
Reduce the Cost"
The modifications to
engines needed to comply with new emissions legislation are causing
more heat to be dissipated through the cooling system. To achieve the
increased heat transfer, radiators and other coolers are stacked one
behind the other resulting in thicker cores and higher system
resistance. This situation is complicated because of the need to
reduce noise and smaller radiator areas, brought about by better
driver visibility and aesthetics. To drive the air through these
thicker cores the pressure produced by the fan has to increase. There
have been many experiments using mixed flow and centrifugal fans but
these solutions suffer because of lack of space and cost. Truflo Air
Movement Ltd has developed a new product. The "Tandem
System" allows a fan of a given diameter to produce up to 50%
more pressure and create no more noise than a standard fan, with only
a small increase in overall length. This multi-stage product enables
higher system resistances to be overcome with a unit, which replaces
the existing fan with minimal modification. As every application is
different, Truflo is happy to work with customers to develop an
optimised solution for a specific machine.
GKD TECHNIK
Sterling SPP, pump
specialists based in Reading, Berkshire, won the award for the
development and marketing of the new SPP Q Series Autoprime range of
contractors’ pumps. Many months of market research preceded the
development of this new range, during which Sterling SPP carried out
an in-depth study of the duties expected of such pumps, the problems
most often associated with them and both current and expected
legislation relating to likely environmental requirements during the
projected lifetime of the design. Construction News stated the pump
was "a product that is superior to its predecessors in nearly
every respect".
The M8-35 articulated dump
truck (ADT) is Multidrive’s most innovative product to date. The
machine looks and operates quite differently to any other ADT. The
most revolutionary feature is the non-tipping body - the M8-35 ejects
its load, rather than spilling it out. "It took six years to
develop the product" says David Tetchner, Multidrive’s
Construction Equipment Sales Manager "and two of those years were
spent just on designing the ejector system". The machine also
boasts all wheel drive and steer, plus fully independent suspension.
The M8-35 is not only agile on rough or muddy terrain, but is also
capable of high-speed motorway travel.
