THE AMAZING STORY OF EXCAVATORS

Volume 1: Makers of Machines that Reshape the World

By Peter Grimshaw - Published March 2002

The Amazing Story of Excavators is the sixth book in KHL's Classic Construction Series. This encyclopaedic industrial history aims to produce the definitive work on excavator manufacturers and models. The book has taken over five years collating the information needed for this new work that involved researching every existing excavator manufacturer today. The first volume has nearly 900 entries covering all known manufacturers, past and present, with descriptive text and photographs. Amply illustrated with hundreds of photographs, this book will become invaluable to anyone involved with, or interested in, mobile machines and the construction, civil engineering, quarrying and surface mining industries.

The second volume, due to be published in March 2003, is entitled From Steam Shovels to Modern Masterpieces of Engineering and will include in-depth reviews of the development of the different types of excavators referred to in Volume 1.

The author, Peter Grimshaw (BSc, MSc, FRGS, FGS), is widely known as the father of construction equipment history. His inspired book, Excavators, was published in 1985 and was the first widely read book on this topic of modern times. A vast number of published works that are available today emanated from the success of the book.

Other books in the Classic Construction Series include 500 Years of Earthmoving, The History of Cranes, The History of Road Building Equipment, The Top Ten Construction Achievements of the 20th Century and Machinery in Miniature.

INWARD MISSION FROM MEXICO

18-20 February 2002

The aim of the mission was to promote UK manufactured construction equipment and components to Mexican buyers and influencers. Seven senior personnel from Mexican construction magazines and newspapers, contracting and rental companies and the Vice President of Public Works of the Construction Chamber attended the Mission. Their interest arose from the opportunities made available since the signing of the EU trade agreement in 2000. UK exporters can now compete on equal terms to US and Canadian exporters. They were also keen to learn of developments in new technology.

The Missioners had a full itinerary, with tours of Oxford and York and factory visits and presentations from Komatsu UK, Miller Welding Engineers, JCB and Caterpillar UK. They also visited the RCID (Resource Centre for Innovative Design) at Newcastle University and Loughborough University. They met with members of the CEA's Export Marketing Group (EMG) where they had the opportunity to discuss the state of trade. After their UK tour, they flew to Spain and visited British exhibitors at the international construction equipment fair (SMOPyC) in Zaragoza.

The mission was worthwhile because of the high quality of the delegates who attended. Much preparation had gone into making sure that invitees were those that UK companies wanted to see. It was also successful because of the huge efforts which the host companies had put into making sure that the right staff met and talked to the Missioners. The Mexican delegation were impressed by the world class manufacturing facilities they visited and with the cutting edge research being carried out at the Universities.

Feedback has been very positive, although it is too early to say whether business has been generated as a result. Nevertheless, the goodwill developed will certainly create opportunities for UK companies selling into Mexico and the Missioners can be in no doubt as to the quality of UK products and the backup which our manufacturing companies are able to offer.

EMG members agreed that the CEA should follow through their initiative by mounting a mission to Mexico in 2003.
