MEi SUPPORTS "BIGGEST HANGER" RECORD!

When Essex fork truck dealer, Fork Truck Direct, approached MEi for a system to weigh a coat hanger, the initial reaction was one of puzzlement. The call came from Mike Dixon, the company's Sales Manager, who assured MEi that no leg was being pulled!

In fact Fork Truck Direct's customer,
H & L Russel of Romford had asked for help in lifting and weighing a giant coat hanger in an attempt to gain entry to the book of Guinness World Records.

MEi came to the rescue with the loan of a pair of newly introduced UniFork weighing forks which were put on the truck specially for the occasion. A UniLoad 250 display completed the installation on the Clark machine.

Tim Pang installed the system and he and Chris Taylor attended the official measuring, at which Chris became one of the official "'witnesses" to the event. An official photographer recorded the measuring of the hanger which was 5.5 metres wide, 2.5 metres high and 400 mm thick. The weight was 721 kg. The giant hanger is made of wood with a steel hook on top.

Richard Green, the MD of H & L Russel, was very pleased with the result and when the "evidence" has been examined by Guinness World Records there is every chance that the record will be verified. Unless, of course someone has an even bigger hanger!

NORDBERG IS NOW METSO MINERALS

Nordberg (UK) Ltd, leading equipment suppliers to the UK and Irish mining, quarrying and recycling markets, have changed their name to Metso Minerals (UK) Ltd. The change in name reflects the new global identity of parent company, Nordberg Group, which became Metso Minerals in April.

Metso Minerals are a major operating division of the Finnish based Metso Corporation, a global supplier of process industry machinery and systems. Metso Corporation will actively promote their long-term strategic decision to invest in the rock and minerals processing business. As part of this strategy, Metso have also made the public offer to acquire all of the shares of Svedala Industri AB.

Metso Minerals will be a leading supplier of complete systems, crushing and screening equipment, spares and wear parts, as well as services, for the rock and mineral processing industries. Their goal is to provide customers with superior products and services based on Metso's wide experience in product technology, research and development, and process and automation expertise. The current Nordberg product range will continue to carry the Nordberg name under the Metso Minerals banner.

Commenting on the company's change in name, Brian Moseley, Managing Director of Metso Minerals (UK) Ltd, said: "Our new name and corporate identity emphasise Metso's commitment to the rock and minerals processing industry. The change in company name will not affect the legal status between ourselves and any of our customers and business partners. We will retain all of our current distribution agreements".

THE POLYDICYCLOPENTADIENE (pDCPD) REVELATION

The Reaction Injection Moulding (RIM) of your component parts - using pDCPD (trade names Metton and Telene) - would mean that the parts would be durable, have excellent impact strength (even at temperatures as low as -40º C), be 40% lighter in weight than steel and, compared to PU RIM, have better appearance and greater design freedom.

Other advantages of this material are that it is readily mouldable into large, complex shapes (fenders, engine covers, tank covers, cab doors….), it is readily paintable and non corrosive. The Reaction Injection Moulding of pDCPD is not only capable of producing large, one-piece, engine hoods, but can be used to produce "dunnage" applications as it can be moulded into intricate shapes that nest parts for shipment.

LMC Technik Ltd supply a variety of Reaction Injection Moulded pDCPD exterior components to the construction and agricultural vehicle industries (including Caterpillar and Volvo). Many of the advantages highlighted here are essential elements for vehicles operating in severe environments, if any longevity of component life is to be expected. The example pictured is the Caterpillar 914G, for which LMC moulds, paints and assembles the hood at their Fence Houses facility in Tyne & Wear.

Contact LMC Technik Ltd today to find out how they can help you to revolutionise your current component fabrication techniques.

NEW-LOOK CEA WEB SITE
www.coneq.org.uk

The CEA web site is being completely revamped - with a launch date later this summer. It will contain many new and exciting features, reinforcing our image and corporate colours. As before, there will be two main areas - one for public viewing, the other for CEA members only.

To enable us to dispense with circulating bulky e-mails and circulars, we will be encouraging the use of the "Members Only" area for members to:

  • retrieve meeting papers and other key information
  • access the diary of events
  • use the "Discussion Group" to air their views and raise topics with other members and the CEA Secretariat

The "Public" area will include:

  • background information on the CEA
  • services we provide
  • a picture guide to construction equipment
  • selected world trade figures
  • hot links to member companies' web sites
  • product locator
Kim Fitzpatrick (CEA) has been working on the content and design of the site, with Mike Lane (IDEA Ltd) organising the technical aspects. We have a close working relationship with IDEA - as many of you will know, Mike is also the co-ordinator of our successful Business Tracker CD ROM. The existing site (www.coneq.org.uk) has now exceeded TWO MILLION accesses.

FULL-TIME, PART-TIME OR CONSULTANCY WORK REQUIRED

My career has been largely export oriented and has given me a wide experience in many world markets. I have travelled extensively to over 65 countries with a strong bias towards the former Socialist States of Eastern Europe. A good knowledge of the German language has helped in this respect. I have held junior and senior management posts and have experience of running both my own company and large divisions of companies. This has encompassed personnel, accounting, book-keeping, management of sales teams inside and outside the company and the design, implementation and management of computer systems. I would now like to pass on the benefit of this experience to a company with a committed export policy of seeking to exploit opportunities outside the UK. For further details, contact Joanna Oliver at the CEA offices (joanna@admin.co.uk).

CEA ON THE ROAD

When I became Chief Executive in 2000, I set an objective to visit more members in their own factories and offices.

Gone are the days when trade associations can sit and wait for all their members to turn up at meetings and conferences to give their views and input. Particularly for smaller companies, when there is an order to get out or an important customer to see, trade association meeting attendance can get pushed down the order of priority. Even in the larger member companies the average executive has some pretty daunting demands on his or her time. This is also a reason why you will see more regional CEA meetings in the future - put simply we have to get closer to our membership to make sure we are acting in your interests.

Last year I was able to meet many members on a short "summer tour" but this year we are being more ambitious. Myself and other CEA Secretariat team personnel will be knocking on members' doors up and down the country during August. We can't see all of our 100 members in that time, but we plan to see a good cross-section to help us get feedback, ideas and support for activities on your behalf. As with any visit, it's good to have an invitation first - I look forward to hearing from you!

Q: If I have dismissed an employee for theft from work, but the courts have subsequently found him "Not Guilty", do I have to take the employee back?
A:
You do not have to take the employee back. However, you need to have ensured that you acted reasonably in dismissing the employee. There is a long established three part test that is applied by tribunals in determining the reasonableness of the action taken by the employer: 1. Whether you believed the employee was guilty of gross misconduct; 2. Whether you had reasonable grounds for that belief; 3. Whether you carried out as much investigation into the matter as was reasonable in the circumstances. At the hearing you need to have ensured that you provided the employee with the opportunity to present his views before considering the action to dismiss.

Q: We have an employee who is due to return from maternity leave on Monday and has found out today (Friday) that she is pregnant again. She says she will be returning to work but will be entitled to a further period of maternity leave for the next child. Is this correct?
A:
Yes it is correct. The contract of employment remains in force during maternity leave and there is no break in service. As such, therefore, your employee will be entitled to full maternity rights based on her length of service for the next child.

Q: We have spent a large sum of money on setting up a computer network, developing our web site and obtaining a particular domain name. What is the capital allowances situation?
A: Provided that you are a small company, defined as satisfying two or more of the following requirements: annual turnover not more than £2.8 million, assets not more than £1.4 million, not more than 50 employees, then 100% first year allowances can be claimed in respect of the network installation, including cabling and the development of the web site. Unfortunately the allowance does not extend to expenditure incurred on acquiring a domain name.
