INWARD MISSION FROM MEXICO

We urgently need to hear from CEA members who would be interested in an inward mission of buyers from Mexico.

Pam Hyde

Those who could be invited are large contractors, housing association equipment buyers, potential distributors and influential journalists - your suggestions are welcomed. In order to obtain 60% government assistance towards the air fares we need a minimum of five companies who agree to the mission visiting their premises. To date just four companies have declared an interest - JCB, Caterpillar, Uniturn and Edwin Lowe.

The government will also pay £70 per day for hotels and 50% of the costs of a reception. In addition, if the mission takes place within a year of Pam Hyde's visit to Mexico in October 2000, the government will also pay for the mission's travel within the UK. Participating members will therefore do so at minimum expense.

We plan to work with the Spanish construction equipment association, ANMOPyC, as this will make the visit more attractive to those invited and ANMOPyC will also pay a percentage of the fares from Mexico. Please let us know of your interest without delay.

Mexico is the largest trading nation in Latin America and the eighth largest in the world. GDP growth has been strong since 1996 and foreign direct investment has surged into the country, attracted by Mexico's low costs of production and membership of NAFTA.

INDIA

India is predicted by the World Bank to become one of the leading economies by 2010. Much of its growth is due to the wide ranging reforms, which the Indian government initiated in 1991. To help organisations from both countries to take advantage of opportunities in the UK and India, the Indo-British Partnership (IBP) was launched in 1993 by the then Indian and British Prime Ministers. British investment has since increased 15 fold since 1991 to over £3 billion cumulatively. India is Britain's tenth largest market and we are now India's second largest trading partner. A speaker on India was arranged for the recent Export Marketing Group meeting.

MALAYSIAN EXPORT BARRIERS

At the Export Marketing Group meeting in March it was reported that a member who had been exporting dumpers to Malaysia for over 20 years had been effectively prevented from exporting because a Malaysian company had registered a design for dumpers which apparently gave them the exclusive right to make or import dumpers. The implication was that legal action would be taken against the CEA member if they tried to continue to export to Malaysia. Although assistance was sought from the High Commission and the Trade Policy Unit of the DTI, the matter remained unresolved until the CEA took legal advice from global patent attorneys, Beck Greener. Jacqueline Needle, partner at Beck Greener, advised that our CEA member should continue to export - even if a civil action was brought against them, the case would fail.
