BAUCON ASIA
20-23 November 2001 : Singapore

The CEA acted as the Trade Partners UK SESA (Support for Exhibitions and Seminars Abroad) sponsors of the British Group at Baucon Asia, held at the Singapore Expo Centre in Changi. 18 British companies exhibited with SESA grant aid (ie 60% of space and construction costs up to a ceiling of £2,300).

Rob and Joanna Oliver ran the CEA British Group Information Centre together with Maszanah Ahmad, a local hostess/interpreter, who wore traditional Singapore-Malay dress, which attracted many people to the stand and helped break the ice when opening discussions. The Information Centre provided a meeting point, e-mail and Internet access points, telephone and fax connections and cold drinks and snacks. The CEA interactive CD-ROM, Business Tracker, was distributed to visitors making specific enquiries. Seven British companies displayed literature and graphics on the stand. CEA staff took enquiries and trade leads from visitors, including a number of distributors. Trade UK (an e-commerce web site designed for overseas companies to source products from British manufacturers) was also promoted on the stand.

There were 347 exhibitors from 32 countries. In addition to the British Group there were National Pavilions from Germany and Spain. The guest of honour at the official opening was Mr Mah Bow Tan, the Singapore Minister for National Development, accompanied by Mr Albert Hong - a leading figure in Singapore industry. 9,137 visitors attended Baucon Asia from 50 countries and regions. The quality of visitors was high with many being of CEO or Director status. Although predominantly from Singapore, the British Information Centre recorded visitors from Australia, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, South Korea, Thailand, Turkey, United Arab Emirates and Vietnam. The Commercial Section of the British High Commission in Singapore is enthusiastic and keen to help British exporters and can provide market overviews and tailored market information.

Baucon Asia was a very well-organised exhibition and visitors to the show expressed a belief that British companies produce high quality products with good after-sales service. British exhibitors felt the exhibition worthwhile and reported good levels of new orders.

Opportunities for the sale of construction equipment exist across a wide range of products - there are still extensive construction and renovation projects in Singapore. If British companies are serious about doing business in the region the opinion was that they must appoint a local distributor or agent and expect to support them through regular contact and visits. Companies who had agents but did not visit them had found that the sales very quickly fell off.

TWO NEW EVENTS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY FROM THE ORGANISERS OF BAUMA

BAUCON INDIA
4-7 September 2002 : New Delhi - Pragati Maidan Centre
www.bauconindia.de

Munich Trade Fairs have announced their first event in India for the building and construction industry. There is huge support from the Indian Government for massive investment in the transport and roads infrastructure throughout the sub-continent. British industry has always been popular in India and Baucon provides an outstanding opportunity for UK manufacturers to be part of this development. Unfortunately, Trade Partners UK have turned down the CEA’s request for support for this exhibition, but they are confident that their friends in Munich will offer sensible participation terms. The CEA believes that its members should take advantage of this event, since the organisers are tried and trusted and thus a good attendance is assured.

BAUMA CHINA
5-8 November 2002 : New Shanghai Exhibition Centre

www.bauma-china.com

Everyone talks about the "potential" of China’s vast market, so here is a real chance for UK industry to explore it for themselves. Bauma China takes place there in November 2002. Munich Trade Fairs are major shareholders in the new Shanghai Exhibition Centre, which opened on 1 November 2001. The centre is constructed very much on the lines of Munich’s own magnificent centre, although is not yet so large. It is situated in Pudong, the extraordinary new development on the opposite side of the Huangpu river from Shanghai itself. The CEA has not at present been granted financial support from Trade Partners UK, but has been offered reasonable, slightly discounted rates for space and stand construction by the organisers. Excellent space allocation is also guaranteed. Anyone who knows Munich’s Bauma knows what a stunning show that is - why not try the Chinese version next year?
