MEMBER VISITS

CEA Secretariat staff have been travelling around the country visiting member companies on site, which has proved a very valuable exercise. Not only have we had the chance to see first-hand how member companies operate, but have learnt how better we can assist members in different areas. I would like to extend a big "thank you" on behalf of us all for taking the time to see us. Any CEA member who has not been visited and would like to make an appointment, please contact Sharna Gollogly at the CEA offices. (sharna@admin.co.uk).

STERLING SPP - AUTOPRIME

Sterling SPP, part of the Sterling Fluid Systems Group, design, manufacture, supply and service pumps, pump packages and associated equipment for a diverse range of applications and industries. Manufacturing is based at their large, purpose-built factory at Coleford in Gloucestershire. This ten acre site is the centre for the production of the Autoprime Division which specialises in the design and manufacture of mobile, diesel driven contractor pumpsets, predominantly supplied to the plant hire/rental, construction, water, mining, quarrying, agriculture and environmental industries.

Handling water, sewage, sludge and solids, the Autoprime range is designed to perform a variety of applications, including ground water control, over-pumping, cleaning, pipe relining, flood relief, spillage control and emergency pumping. The range covers general purpose sets for standard applications, sound attenuation for operation within noise sensitive areas, high and extra high head for mining and deep water extraction and extra flow for flood relief and large volume transfer or extraction.

Two models; the Qi150 and 150M, were developed in close partnership with the construction and environmental industries. The Qi150 is the latest in low noise pumping technology. This model not only handles the most challenging pumping applications, but also can attain reductions in noise level emissions; as low as 59 db(A) at 7 meters. It is ideal for operating in urban and other noise sensitive areas. The 150M is used extensively within the plant hire and mining industry for general purpose pumping applications. Its versatile features include large fuel tank capacity, long running time, site/road trailer or skid mounting options and solid handling capability. Other developments have been the introduction of the new series of extra high head, vacuum assisted pumps with special applications for high head de-watering operations in all types of open-cast mining or quarrying. Sterling SPP have one of the only end-suction de-watering pumps capable of discharging flows up to 600m³/hr at heads of up to 160m. They will also handle solids in suspension up to a maximum of 50mm.

All Sterling SPP pumps are available with a patented intelligent priming system "Smartprime" which senses the suction conditions and automatically synchronises the operation of the pump accordingly. This gives the valuable added benefits of extended vacuum pump life, reduced power consumption and increased fuel efficiency. Sterling SPP also have an extensive range of hydraulic submersible pump-ends and power packs.

EXPERIENCE THE DIFFERENCE - BIG REALLY IS BEAUTIFUL
Miller

With over 23 years’ experience in design and manufacture of large buckets for both excavators and wheeled loading shovels, Miller pride themselves on being able to supply a service second to none for the large bucket requirements of their customers. The Sales and Product Support Team is on hand to ensure that you receive non-obligatory advice that will provide you with the most appropriate design to suit your specific application. In other words, providing tailor-made solutions accompanied by detailed drawings for pre-manufacture approval so that customers benefit from the correct choice of bucket for the specific application first time.

In today’s highly competitive market, never has machine performance been more important, especially with larger excavators. With the latest in bucket design technology, Miller have created a solution that will not only improve excavator performance, but will also dig faster, cut through material more easily, load more dump trucks per day and reduce fuel consumption.

Through expert design knowledge Miller have re-designed the conventional bucket to improve breakout force without compromising capacity. The geometry of Miller’s unique design is such that the ground engaging area is significantly less than that of a standard conventional bucket. The Miller bucket not only maintains the OEM geometry, but also has total clearance throughout the digging cycle. The unique shape enhances bucket fill factor and in most cases can load up to 25% more whilst using less excavator fuel. It also enables customers to work more effectively, increase machine cycle times, carry more material and load up to an additional eight payloads per day. All these benefits combined equate to an incredible 25% improvement in efficiency and fuel savings whilst providing additional revenue earning opportunities through enhanced machine performance.

ENGINE COOLING FANS
Truflo Air Movement Ltd

The demands on fans are changing in the field of diesel engine cooling. The need to reduce exhaust gas emissions, to meet increasingly stringent legislation, is driving up heat rejection and therefore the output requirements of the fan. Environmental and legislative demands mean that fan noise has to be reduced. At the same time, the available space for radiators and fans is becoming more limited, as equipment manufacturers streamline the exterior of their machines. The market is increasingly turning to suppliers of sheet metal fans because of their versatility.

Truflo Air Movement Ltd design and manufacture sheet metal fans of up to 3 metres diameter with up to 15 blades. They supply diesel engine customers worldwide and have facilities in Tipton, England and Anderson, Indiana, USA and are QS9000 registered. Truflo are the only UK manufacturer of sheet metal fans, and one of the few worldwide with the necessary technical skills, expertise and equipment to meet these new requirements.

In Truflo’s experience, individual fan designs are needed for the majority of applications, rather than a catalogue solution. This requires the production of small quantity, high variety, products. Truflo have invested in development and manufacturing technology, which gives them the flexibility to meet this key market requirement. Truflo have also developed new products to address the specific needs of the markets they serve.

RDS TECHNOLOGY LTD

RDS Technology Ltd, formed in 1969, have specialised in the design and manufacture of electronic instruments since 1971. Between 1971 and 1985 the majority of the company’s products were designed and sold into the agricultural engineering industry and in 1984 they were awarded the Sir Rowland Burke Trophy for "an outstanding contribution for the mechanisation of agriculture through their development of control and monitoring equipment". During 1986, due to the decrease of trade within the agricultural engineering industry, RDS turned their attention to other applications such as quarrying, industrial tractors and construction, anywhere where their experience of putting electronics onto "off-road" vehicles could be used. This diversification has been highly successful. In 1996, RDS were awarded a DTI SPUR achievement award in recognition of their contribution to precision farming technology. In 1999, RDS also won the Millennium Product Award for the RDS Pro-Series 8000. In 2001 at the SIMA exhibition in France, RDS were granted an Innovation Award for their "Differential Global Positioning System", which facilitates tracking the precise location of any type of vehicle.

Recent product launches include the Weighlog 100 which "measures the hydraulic differential" of goods, the ICP 200 Printer which provides hard copy output for the preparation of invoices and the simplification of COSHH / FEPA record-keeping and the Binmaster 8000 which provides the nett weight of the material being weighed on FEL and REL bin trucks. RDS currently supply over 90 off-highway vehicle OEMs worldwide and have a distributor network in 29 countries. All RDS distributors in the UK and overseas are qualified to offer an installation service and fully comprehensive support facilities. Product information and instruction manuals are available in most major European languages.
