Brazil – Land of Opportunity?
The CEA’s Joanna Oliver is just back from a two week UK Trade & Investment supported scoping visit to Brazil. In addition to attending the very successful M&T Expo Exhibition in Sao Paulo, Joanna visited OEMs, leading contractors, distributors, environmental and community based schemes, trade associations and government officials.
Despite continued high import duties and a tangled red tape web of regulation, there would appear to be opportunities for UK manufacturers – especially those interested in joint manufacturing ventures, with niche products not presently manufactured in Brazil and in materials handling, environment and recycling. Erika Azevedo at the British Consulate in Sao Paulo proved to be of great help during the visit – and is looking forward to assisting other UK companies interested in doing business in the market
(erika.azevedo@fco.gov.uk).
Joanna will be producing a report on her findings, which will be launched later this summer. UK Trade & Investment will be running a high level conference to promote the UK’s capability as a centre of excellence for the Advanced Engineering sector. They will be promoting a major outward mission and event to Brazil in October and CEA members will be sent details shortly. |

CEA UK Pavilion – Government grants and FREE British
Airways business class flights available!
25-29 November 2009 – Bangalore
Although the Indian market, in common with the rest of
the world, has seen a sharp decline in sales in the last
12 months, leading market research company, Off-Highway
Research, predicts a robust 28 per cent growth in 2010.
|
|
|
(Continued
from previous column)
In
the period 2010-2013, the market trend is likely to grow
steadily between 14 and 19 per cent, and all types of
equipment will see outright growth, led by crawler
excavators, motor graders, backhoe loaders, wheeled
loaders, cranes and compaction equipment. Importantly, specialist equipment for particular applications that have sold only in small numbers in the past, may also witness increased demand, and so mini and wheeled excavators, and skid-steer loaders might well become more than the niche products that they are now.
The CEA will run a UK Pavilion at Excon – giving you cost effective and fully fitted shell scheme stands at the show.
Click here for the CEA UK Group prospectus for the exhibition. In addition, government grants of £1,400 are available to eligible exhibitors – an application form is at the end of the prospectus.

Batteries Directive (2006/66/EC) – it applies to you!
The Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations 2009 implement in the UK the waste battery provisions of the EU Directive on Batteries and Accumulators and Waste Batteries and Accumulators 2006/66/EC. The Regulations set out requirements for waste battery collection, treatment, recycling and disposal for all battery types including arrangements by which the UK intends to meet waste portable battery separate collection targets of 25% by 2012 and 45% by 2016. Any persons wishing to place on the market new primary (single use) batteries and accumulators (more commonly known as rechargeable batteries), and
products that may contain batteries and accumulators, will be obligated. These Regulations supplement the Batteries and Accumulators (Placing on the Market) Regulations 2008, which introduced a range of product design requirements, including restrictions on the use of mercury and cadmium in new batteries, new battery labelling requirements and requirements for new appliances to be designed so that batteries can be easily removed.
The Regulations cover three broad categories of batteries – portable, industrial and automotive. The obligations for each category are different but by far the most onerous are those for portable batteries. OEMs are likely to be placing mostly automotive, and some industrial, batteries on the market and, as such, are required to register with BERR by 15 October 2009. During a meeting with BERR on 2 June the CEA learned that the obligations will rest with the legal entity that places the batteries, or the product containing the batteries, on the UK market for the first time. Visit
www.berr.gov.uk/files/file51268.pdf
for the UK guidance notes. The CEA has invited BERR officers to explain the obligations at the next General Technical Committee meeting in September at Volvo,
Duxford. For further information e-mail tim@admin.co.uk.
