Continuation
of Scrappage Scheme Can Help Us
The CEA are supporting the SMMT and EEF call to extend the
car scrappage scheme into 2010. The £300 million
initiative is set to end soon but, as has been well
publicised, has stimulated car sales by offering
incentives for the replacement of old vehicles. Germany
has seen a similar positive response to their (more
generous) government scheme. Whilst it is unlikely that
the government will extend the scrappage allowance to
cover construction equipment – many suppliers to our
sector also serve the car market and any help they can get
is to be welcomed. |

Technical
The CECE Technical Commission meets on Wednesday (30
September) in Brussels to discuss and agree the European
industry position on a wide range of issues. Ground work
on the main topics will have been done by different
Project Teams the previous day, including those leading on
Outdoor Noise, Machinery Directive and Better Regulation.
The much-awaited European Commission official guidance for
the new Machinery Directive is still far from complete and
CECE is developing papers on some sections in order to
keep the process moving.
On
the same date, the European Aggregates Association (UEPG)
is holding a round table discussion with selected invitees
in Brussels to discuss the potential for collaboration to
develop the UK Mineral Products Association (MPA)
"Safer by Design" project at European level.

Although
the CEA has not been invited to attend, probably because
we have actively opposed this attempt to undermine the
standards-making process, it has been possible to brief
the European Commission and Orgalime invited
representatives with the CEA position, which has been
positively received.
