See www.cece.eu.

"Return to Growth – Going Global, not Local"
On Thursday 15 October the CECE Summit theme is a plea to combat protectionism – either through tariffs or technical barriers to trade. On the spot will be David O'Sullivan, Director General for Trade at the European Commission – with a response from CNH International CEO Franco Fusignani. Political and market experts on Russia will join in a wide-ranging discussion on trade barriers. In part two, the focus will be on technical barriers to trade – with a look at the targets and reality of developing a global product led by the Group Engineering Director of JCB and CECE President, Dr Tim Leverton.

The Thursday bonus is a Networking Reception and Dinner – meet politicians, EU officials, market experts and your counterparts throughout Europe and beyond.

Note: start time for the day is 14.00 hrs.

Market Prospects – Technical Challenges
Stay on for Friday 16 October – and join one of the twin track sessions. These are "Finding the Right Balance" – expert presentations on the technical challenges presented by safety and environmental pressures – and "Return to Growth - Market Strategies 2010+". The latter promises a host of presentations on market trends and prognoses worldwide.

Note: the sessions finish at lunchtime.

Brazil – Major UK Trade & Investment Marketing Event and CEA Trade Mission
São Paulo, Brazil 13-16 October 2009

Travel grants of £750 available to participating companies

  •  Is your company interested in doing business in Brazil?

  • Would you benefit from high profile in market exposure to potential customers – or raising your profile with existing ones?

  • Do you need to gather Brazilian market intelligence?

If the answer to any of the above is “yes” – then the UKTI Brazil Showcase Event is the event for you. On Thursday 15 October, UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) will run a high profile marketing event in São Paulo to showcase the best of UK manufacturing capability to key Brazilian manufacturers and buyers.

As the world’s 5th largest country – and one with rapidly developing infrastructure, there are a wealth of opportunities for UK manufacturers – especially for those with niche products not presently manufactured in Brazil and in materials handling, environment and recycling, interested in joint manufacturing ventures and supply partnering opportunities.

By participating in the showcase you will be able to display your company graphics and literature at the event and take part in the one to one meet the buyer showcase. You will also benefit from extensive pre and post event publicity with a profile of your company being included.

The attached flyer gives an introduction to the UKTI Brazil Showcase Event on 15 October 2009. If you would like to participate UKTI will give you a travel grant of £750 to help cover your costs.

In addition, the CEA is running a construction equipment mini-mission to Brazil to coincide with the UKTI event. Following the CEA’s scoping visit earlier this year we can help with introductions to potential buyers and assist with setting up appointments in Brazil. Joanna Oliver will be in São Paulo to assist you and to help ensure everything runs smoothly.

If you already have customers you would like to see you can use the visit as an opportunity to catch up on your in-market visits – you can stay as long or as little as you wish – but you must be in São Paulo for the night of 14 October for a VIP dinner and for all of the Thursday event.

If you are interested in joining in with the showcase event and CEA mission, or would like more information, please let us know – joanna@aslnorth.co.uk, and register with the event organisers – marlena@btob.co.uk

CEA join EEF campaign for manufacturing
The CEA has joined the EEF's Manufacturing Alliance – as part of a campaign to stress the current and future importance of manufacturing to the UK economy. The EEF produced their flagship report, Manufacturing – Our Future, earlier this year and are planning a series of debates at the Royal Society (on 21 October) and at the upcoming Labour and Conservative Party conferences. This is part of an attempt to raise the public and political profile of manufacturing in the run up to the next General Election, which must be held by mid-2010. The CEA is part of a forum of leading manufacturers' groups organised by the EEF – and will play its part in articulating the case for manufacturing in the coming months. The initiative comes against a backdrop of manufacturing business failures predicted to hit 2,460 this year – compared with 1,600 in 2008.

Survey Alert!
Thanks to all members that support the regular CECE European survey of market trends – the CECE Business Barometer. Contributors receive the full report on the state of markets, employment levels, etc.

Within the next few weeks also look out for the CEA Autumn Survey. This will dig a little deeper on trends specific to CEA members – and make sure we are promoting the right policies and undertaking the activities you value. It will also ensure that in these tough times no member pays "over the odds" for their membership in 2010. Our thanks in advance for your support on this.

Construction Industry Theft Solutions (CITS)
Annual Conference – Tuesday 3 November 2009

The fifth CITS annual conference will be held on Tuesday 3 November 2009. This important event, in the plant security world, will be held at JCB’s world headquarters at Rocester in Staffordshire.

CITS is a not-for-profit body with unpaid board members from the construction industry. It represents members in discussions with other like-minded bodies and is recognised by the Home Office Plant Theft Action Group (PTAG). CITS aims to reduce plant theft within the construction industry by encouraging the adoption of ‘best practice’ to defeat the criminal.

The 2009 CITS conference will focus on practical solutions to an increasingly troublesome problem that affects construction workers and businesses on a daily basis. Plant theft is estimated to cost the construction industry over £400 million pa. Over and above the direct financial loss plant theft disrupts a sites operation and can put the safety of staff at risk.

The conference this year is sponsored by Datatag ID Ltd, the leading providers of security systems and the power behind the CESAR scheme, and their experts will be on-hand during the conference to answer questions. The conference for 220 delegates from the construction industry will be held in the morning of 3 November and in the afternoon 200 police officers will attend a special conference to further the cause of reducing plant theft and improving stolen equipment recovery rates.

Speakers at the conference include:

  • Hugh Edeleanu – Chairman, HE Services

  • Kevin Clancy – Chairman, Clancy Group plc

  • Douglas McLuckie – Director, A-Plant Ltd

  • Kevin Howells – Managing Director, Datatag ID Ltd

  • Ian Elliott – Detective Constable, Metropolitan Police

CITS is widely supported within the construction industry by civil engineers, contractors and plant hirers and by the police and the insurance and asset finance industries.

The CITS conference is a must for all concerned with plant, site and staff safety and security in the construction and related industries. Tickets for this important, not to be missed, half-day conference can be booked on-line at www.cits-conference.co.uk.

Are you LinkedIn?
LinkedIn is a networking site targeted at businesses and offers excellent marketing opportunities. Just create a home page, or profile, and include as much or as little detail as you wish and then start collecting "contacts" from your area of business or interest (see Joanna Oliver’s profile as an example (www.linkedin.com/in/joannaoliver). Through these contacts you make others, who can be potential customers or suppliers around the world. Additionally, you can advertise events you are organising or exhibitions you are attending and send details round your network of contacts to let them know what you are up to. You can also start discussion groups and sign up like-minded individuals who may be able to help you in your business. UKTI has a user group to promote overseas trade and Conexpo 2011 (www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=2208301). LinkedIn subscribers can join this group – along with more than 300 groups with discussions about trade, international investment and much more. The best part is it's free!

As LinkedIn is still in its infancy in the UK it is easy to sign up influential contacts who are trying to build up their lists. However, once it takes off, people will become more choosy about who they accept, making it harder to pick up high level contacts. So what are you waiting for – get LinkedIn today.

The UKTI LinkedIn group brings together trade and investment experts and businesses. It offers knowledge, insight and support, facilitating connections to help businesses achieve international success - View this site
